Inca Central

.....an overnight bus ride was our next peruvian pleasure - heading to the beautiful city of Arequipa. Explored this Spanish colonial city full of impressive architecture and spectacular backdrop of the Andes. Visited the Santa Catalina convent set up by the Spanish in the mid 1500s and both very grateful we were not nuns (and even more grateful we weren´t the guinea pigs they ate ... in fact it´s still a popular dish today...) and also checked out a museum featuring the frozen body of a young Inca woman sacrificed high up a mountain over five hundred years ago (and only discovered about 10 years ago). The next morning we headed high into the Andes through a pass at around 5000m to the Colca Canyon, the deepest in the world. Saw massive condors gliding on the thermals in the spectacular canyon and enjoyed seeing locals who still wear traditional clothing. Unfortunately we had to share the experience with about 15 other coaches but amazing none the less. Flew to Cuzco, a city of about 300,000 that was the capital of the Inca empire and has a really interesting mix of Inca and Spanish architecture. This is tourist central and there are touts every step of the way but it´s still a pretty impressive gateway to the Inca Trail, which we start tomorrow ... can´t wait. Hope you´re all well and enjoying your own beds and the low altitude.
P.S. No yetis yet.
